The Secret Life of Pets
Demographic Intelligence projects adults are not having children as frequently as previous generations. An average decline falling below 75% by 2023, 25% by 2028, and possibly 10% by 2032. However, two out of every three homes in America have reported to include a pet, and 95% of American pet owners consider their pets to be family members. Are pets the new babies? What does that mean for the average home buyer and consumer? The answer: pet enhancements.
Some department stores are removing children’s sections and, in their place, expanding the pet items section. Silicon Valley has begun rooting deep into the “Pet Tech” industry due to Millennials now being the largest consumer group. Millennials are willing to spend more on their pets than older generations, and are looking for more pet accommodations in their homes.

Pet enhancements can vary widely according to what type of pet you have and what your personal needs are. These items fit seamlessly within any home and are not limited to single-family homes. Most pet friendly home buyers prefer a fenced-in yard. Bonus outdoor pet spaces can include a dog run or a designated “potty space”.

Dutch doors are a great option for pets, allowing the owner to open the top or bottom separately and are more convenient than baby gates. Pet wash stations have grown in popularity and can be added to mudrooms, laundry spaces, garages, or club houses.
Instead of a pot filler over your stove, you can have a pull out “water bowl filler” fitted to the lower end of your kitchen island. Linen areas can be subbed out for pet supplies storage or converted into a built-in crate that better fits the aesthetic of a home. Underutilized areas such as the space under a staircase can be converted into your pet’s personal oasis.
Some other pet enhancements that aren’t as obvious can include no-slip flooring material, heated floors, plantation shutters that limit window visibility to lower anxiety, and sound proofing walk-in closets to ease your pet’s reactions during firework related events.
Do you have a furry or scaly family member that could benefit from any of these enhancements?
