The Truth About Affordable Housing
When most people hear the term “affordable housing” they may picture low-quality, destitute developments that are a drain on local communities. However, nothing could be further from the truth. A recent study by University of California, Irvine revealed that affordable housing decreases crimes and increases surrounding property values. Specifically, “the study found affordable housing added value to nearby homes by about $16,000.” Affordable housing also significantly lowered most types of crime, especially violent crime such as robbery and assault.
There are many other studies throughout the country that concur with the UCI study, including one done by Stanford University. This particular study expanded on UCI’s findings to show that affordable housing also positively increases diversity and can revitalize poverty-stricken neighborhoods.
There is currently a huge need for housing, particularly affordable housing. It is a crisis that many states and cities are facing. Irvine has been voted the safest city in America for 16 years in a row while providing the most affordable housing in the entire county. This proves affordable housing can be achieved in conjunction with providing a safe and prosperous community.
