Bringing Markets Back To Local Neighborhoods
Gone are the days when you could walk (that’s right…walk) to your corner market for a few last minute items you forgot on your weekly grocery list. For most urban dwellers this means driving to the grocery store, visiting the produce section in a department store or going to the “big box” stores where the smallest package can feed a crowd.
So, how do we change that? According to the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), there seems to be a growing trend driven by consumer interest in obtaining fresh produce direct from the farm. Farmers markets are cropping up all over California with locally-grown produce fresh from the fields. Some markets are open year-round while others setup for a short season.
Now, every Saturday morning from nine to two I can step right out of my apartment building onto the lawn and purchase fresh or certified organic, vine-ripened produce (lettuce, tomatoes, fruit in season, raw honey, etc.) from local farmers.
Check with your city for a local farmers market near you and enjoy the benefits of fun, fresh air and healthy eating. Support your local farmers.
