Veterans Village | A Place for Veterans and Their Families to Call Home
On Tuesday, April 5th, the Veterans Village affordable housing development in Glendale, California hosted an open house. It was an opportunity, for new residents, the community and all of the entities involved in making this project a reality, to see the cooperative spirit that was envisioned during the initial design process. The project consists of 44 affordable housing units, ranging in size from one to three bedrooms. These homes are made available to Veterans and their families allowing them to get a fresh start in life.
At the open house, a U.S. Navy veteran told her story about serving our country and being honorably discharged, after which she faced many challenges and obstacles, struggling to adjust to civilian life. She became homeless; a story all too common for the heroes that serve our country. Now, after rising above it all and persevering, her prayers were answered; she lives in Veterans Village. She has a community that provides her with the support she needs and a safe place to call home.
Many people and groups were involved in bringing Veterans Village to completion. With guidance from the Glendale Housing Authority and the vision of developer Thomas Safran & Associates, WHA designed Veterans Village and is proud to have been a part of creating an environment to enrich the lives of people and the surrounding area. The project team also includes New Directions for Veterans, a nonprofit organization that provides on-site case management giving Veterans resources for job placement, affordable housing and the assistance they need to get back on their feet. More than 4,500 applications were received, which shows the tremendous need for more affordable housing, especially for veterans. We hope this project will inspire more developments to integrate communities like Veterans Village.
