Green is the Future!
Over the last few years, there has been an increased demand for energy efficient homes, cars and an overall “green” lifestyle. In order to significantly reduce our overall carbon footprint, new housing policies are geared towards a permanent shift in green building trends. By 2020, all new California homes will be net zero energy (ZNE) while non-residential must be ZNE by 2030.
What is zero net energy?
Brookfield Homes defines zero net energy as “the amount of energy used on site is equal to or less than the amount of energy generated on site.” This process allows the home to be self-sufficient in terms of energy production.
Utilizing WHA’s design, Brookfield Homes created a ZNE home at Greendoor at Edenglen. Recently, several members of our staff visited this site where we were able to get an inside look at the future of our housing market. This net zero home located in Ontario, California produces more power than the resident(s) consumes through photovoltaic panels and a solar powered water heater. Although up front costs are more, the long-term benefits are favorable with significantly lower utility bills, federal tax credits, local rebates and a higher investment return.
How can you adapt green strategies in your current home?
– Plant deciduous shade trees or shrubs near your house. If planted on the home’s west side, this can help warm your home during the winter and cool your home during the summer.
– Upgrade or replace windows. This can save you 7-24% on heating and air conditioning bills.
– Turn down the temperature of your water heater. Typically, water heaters are set at 140 degrees – try lowering it to 120 degrees. Every 10 degrees you reduce the temperature will save you about 5% on your electricity bill.
– Use a low-flow fixture for showers and baths.
– Replace incandescent light bulbs for compact fluorescent lamps (CFL’s). Although the initial cost is about $2-3 higher, CFL’s last longer and can save you about three quarters on your electricity bill.
